SRF Presents: Navigating Change in Airports and Complex Wayfinding Environments with Construction, Implementation, and Processes

View Info

Orlando International Airport recently unveiled Terminal C, a multibillion-dollar greenfield project. Throughout the terminal's construction, the COVID-19 virus had unforeseen impacts on the project, affecting construction, budget, and schedule. Despite a significant industry-wide decline in air traffic, Orlando International Airport persevered with the construction, adapting to new constraints and requirements.

This session offers insights drawn from the challenges faced while navigating the completion of Orlando's Terminal C during an unprecedented period. Changes and dependencies in the supply chain, scope, cost, and resources all played roles in reshaping the project and turning the envisioned terminal into a reality. As air traffic swiftly rebounded, particularly in leisure markets like Orlando, the need to collaborate closely with project stakeholders was accelerated. Understanding customer needs, preferences, and desires became critical to ensure proper representation and guidance, given the limitations of resources and time. While other aspects of terminal readiness took precedence, the timeline for wayfinding elements was compressed due to delays in other areas. This underscored the significance of signage stakeholders taking greater ownership to ensure that signage expectations and deliverables were not only met but exceeded.

In addition to highlighting best business practices and project management strategies, this session will showcase the digital signage and wayfinding solutions implemented within the facility. Through dynamic signage and facility management, Terminal C has successfully embraced a common-use approach to functional assignments, reducing the reliance on traditional static signage.
